HONORING OUR HISTORY – 2025

LESLIE CHIN RN
Loma Prieta
Leslie was our LPENA “secretary in perpetuity,” and much beloved by all who knew her. Every year she made Christmas ornaments by the hundreds for people she worked with, family, friends, and of course our LPENA members. She never missed a birthday or anniversary with hand stamped cards and a personal note written inside her beautiful cards.

Hailey OKULA
Greater Los Angeles

Hailey Okula, RN, was a force both in the emergency department and online. The ED nurse and social media influencer amassed nearly 900,000 followers by helping new graduate nurses make the transition to the profession while sharing her struggles to become a mother. Okula’s life was cut tragically short when she passed away on March 29 at the age of 33 following complications from childbirth.
Okula was the creator of RN New Grads, an online educational resource for new graduate nurses.

STATE COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

Jan 2024 – Member Jan DENNO, Sacramento Chapter, testified at CA State Assembly Public Safety Committee. Jan spoke on behalf of AB 977 which creates higher fines and penalties for people who assault emergency department staff.

All of the Committee voted in favor of passing the bill. The Appropriations Committee also voted in favor of this bill.
ENA was supported by Sutter Health Corp, ACEP and CHA.

Jen Denno and Merideth Holder testified more than once at State legislation hearings.

13 Mar 2024 – Leg Day in Sacramento organized by Stephanie JENSEN was a huge success. There were 50 attendees. Speakers were well received.

CA ENA participated in the CFED Conference in Indian Wells as a co-sponsor. Six speakers represented California ENA.

The August State Council was certainly a highlight for 2024. It was held on the Historic Ship – the Queen Mary. We had 44 members attend. Queen Mary has many historic memories including serving as a troop ship in WWII. It is also haunted. If the opportunity ever arises for you to visit this ship, do it.

Following the State Council Meeting, 20 members took an educational cruise.

The California State Legislature released legislation on violence in the healthcare workplace from the suspense file.

Planning has already begun for the November meeting in 2025. This will be the 50th anniversary of California as a State Council. The colors will be purple and gold. We were chartered on 10 October 1975.

The Education Committee sponsored 15 events in 2024.

Matt Powers is elected to the Board of the Academy of Emergency Nurses.

HONORING OUR HISTORY

Phyllis Turner, RN

Orange Coast Chapter

Phyllis worked at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach for 43 years and was a member of Orange Coast Emergency Nurses Assn (OCENA). Originally, she worked in the ICU & CCU, but then transferred to the ED. She was there for 33 years. She was a MICN, within the Hoag ED in Orange County. Phyllis was also a Parrish Nurse for many years and participated in 3 mission trips to Kenya and Nicaragua. When Hoag started their benefactor program, Phyllis was the 1st RN to be a liaison within the program. Phyllis was a dynamo! Compassion, kindness and advocacy were the name of her game. Everyone was treated as she would treat a family member and with a big smile. Phyllis passed on to be with the Angels above on January 28, 2023, after a valiant fight with cancer.

HONORING OUR HISTORY – 2022

JUANA ANDREA ERVIN, RN

East Bay Chapter

Juana Andrea Ervin was born 24 Apr 1979. Juana was an emergency nurse and nurse practitioner working in the East Bay for over 15 years. A vibrant soul, Juana was a person who had an infectious personality and beautiful presence at work and at home. Juana was a colleague who was always ready to jump in and help, regardless of her workload. She was a compassionate patient advocate, especially to Spanish-speaking patients and their loved ones. Juana was a proud Latina, mother, and nursing professional, constantly working to grow as a clinician and human. I loved working with Juana and know she positively impacted her community and me. Juana died too young on 08 May 2022. She was 43 years old.

HONORING OUR HISTORY

TAMMY LOCKWOOD, RN – 2019

East Bay Chapter

Tammy Lockwood worked as an emergency nurse in the East Bay, primarily at Contra Costa Medical Center and John Muir Health – Concord. Tammy was a passionate educator and mentor who enthusiastically embraced the role of preceptor, teaching many nursing students throughout her career. She was an exceptional role model. She sought opportunities to expand her knowledge and skill sets so that she could best serve her patients and colleagues. Tammy achieved the designation of both Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) from the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN). Tammy was taken from us too soon and is deeply missed.

HONORING OUR HISTORY – 2018

Peggy Burroughs RN
Loma Prieta

Peggy (Margaret) Burroughs of Campbell, CA passed away on July 18, 2018 following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born and raised in Seneca Falls, NY. Peggy enjoyed a 45 year career as an RN in Rochester NY and at Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto, CA. She was also an educator at Mission College, Santa Clara, CA. She is survived by several cousins and close friends.

My most outstanding memory of Peggy was that she was allergic to nuts and it was crazy going to a restaurant with her as she grilled the wait staff on the menu ingredients and if there were nuts anywhere in the kitchen!
Peggy was a long time and very involved ENA member and had served as President of the Loma Prieta Chapter during her tenure. My best memory of her was when we were in Washington, DC for the National Conference. We went to all the military memorials and we walked to the Vietnam Memorial at midnight one night. We spent a long time there and she shared her remembrances of some of her friends that had died in that war. It was a night to remember…and I will always remember that.

1996

CALIFORNIA STATE COUNCIL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT NURSES ASSOCIATION HISTORY – 1996

Much of the information listed for the years 1975 through 1996 was compiled from notes and newsletters written by Historian Liz TAYLOR – East Bay. The Chapter names were taken from these notes and therefore may not include all current chapters for that year. It was also difficult to ascertain functioning committees. Some of the notes contained multiple years. I tried to separate according to listings, but some facts were not always dated.

STATE COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS
The Blue-Ribbon Commission (BRC) went into effect. The changes were many and through the help of the Board and many others, Cal ENA met most of the requirements by the end of the term.

Some of the changes were:

  1. State dues changed from direct billing by the State to National generated billing.
  2. Jacquie SANDVIK chaired the committee to rewrite the Bi-Laws to fit the BRC and California Corporate law. Legal assistance was provided by Carl SANDVIK.
  3. Incorporation was completed. This was a long and arduous task, as California corporate law did not match some of what National wanted. Thanks to the many individuals who helped complete this task.

The State treasury was able to repay past debts and end with a positive balance.

State Council informed the bi-laws were adopted with the incorporation.

The Executive Board served more than one year as the bi-laws changed the term of office to 01 Jan to 31 Dec.

The draft MICN regulations were completed by the MICN Task Force and presented to the State EMS Authority (EMSA). EMSA redrafted the regulations and began the public hearing process.

California became ENA Inc a non-profit organization.

HONORING OUR HISTORY – 1985

Gary Sparger, RN
Orange County/Coast Chapter

Gary Sparger Scholarship He was posthumously inducted into the ENA Hall of Fame with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. He had been a long-standing member of local, state and national ENA and served on many committees along with holding offices at the local and state level. After the inception of the TNCC, Gary led the way in disbursing the class by teaching 55 courses in the first 2 years. Trauma was his love. He was an associate professor of nursing at California State University at Long Beach and pioneered the Trauma/Emergency Clinical Nurse Specialist Program. He also was a consultant and nurse surveyor for trauma center designation throughout the United States. He actively worked in the emergency department both clinically and in administrative/ educational positions and published extensively in journals and textbooks. In 1987 we founded Selfridge, Sparger, and Shea in order to provide consulting and continuing education services to emergency department nurses, and administrators. We gave a quote to ENA when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame that we believed described him, “A teacher and motivator of others affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” As an active ENA member his passing in 1985 led to the loss of an incredible resource.

CALIFORNIA STATE COORDINATING COUNCIL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT NURSES ASSOCIATION HISTORY – 1978

STATE CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS

  • In February an initial interest meeting of local EDNA chapter representatives decided to form a State Chapter.
An organizational meeting of the Executive Board was held in March for the purpose of electing officers. Dues were set at $2.00. The State Chapter became known as the “California Coordinating Council”.
  • Requested State Department of Health to hold off action on MICN certification requirements until CAL EDNA had the opportunity to draw up criteria.
  • Established active representation and dialogue with the California Conference of Local Health Officers (CCLHO) on drafting Paramedic and MICN guidelines.
  • Implemented the presentation of the EDNA Core Curriculum through the University of California system. BRN provider number for CAL EDNA was to come later.
  • Supported the move to certify Emergency Nurses by National EDNA.
  • Established relationship with the California Nurses Association’s Task Force on Emergency Nursing to form the Joint Nursing Commission on EMS.
  • Participated on the Ad Hoc EMS Work Group, a State Health Department sponsored task force to categorize hospital departments: Standby, Basic, Comprehensive and Major (later dropped as a category).
  • Influenced legislation including the Wedworth-Townsend Act and SB 1412, Senator Beilenson’s Comprehensive EMS Act. Represented Emergency Nursing in the development of the State Plan on Emergency Nursing and the development of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
National EDNA membership included 1146 Californians. There were (18) eighteen chartered local chapters.
  • Note – Not sure if these (18) chapters refer to other States like California. Remember, at this time, States were referred to as “State Chapter”.
California received recognition as a Coordinating Council on 10 Oct 1975.
  • The first set of By-Laws were written.
