Committee Report to State Council
The Education Committee met with 11 members present. The new online tool for chapters and committees to request CEU was discussed and presented. This will make the process more streamlined for chapters and committees requesting CEU. Documents are able to be electronically uploaded within the request form. The state conference was discussed briefly, but will be the focus of the May meeting as that will be the appropriate timeline as that project is scheduled for November. Tobin reviewed the various platforms for webinars researched and obtained approval for budget use to obtain a Zoom membership. This will allow webinars to be hosted. A sign in sheet was given for any members of the education committee or state council who are interested in participating in the beta test of the webinar series to sign up. The goal is to produce live webinars throughout the year to provide education and CEU opportunities to our members.
The education committee met with 26 members present. Topics discussed included the education committee goals for the year, CEU process, CEU activities during state council meetings, state educational conference, and a roundtable discussion for any other business.
One goal for the year was to start to have webinars to offer continuing education to our members within the state. Another goal for the committee is to look at partnering with other organizations to help provide speakers for our education conference with the goal being to increase collaboration between organizations. Several members expressed interest in helping coordinate the education event which will be held at the Mission Inn in November in conjunction with the state council meeting. More information on all of the items discussed can be viewed in the meeting minutes.
Emergency Care By The Bay
Once again California ENA’s collaboration with the San Diego Medical Society resulted in a stellar conference. Hosting emergency nurses, residents, and tenured medical staff at the Emergency Care by The Bay conference, held at the scenic Kona Kai Resort on November 8, 2018. The full-day conference was highlighted by the comical case studies presented by ENA’s very own nationally recognized ENA member Terry Foster, RN, from “Untold Stories of the ER”. Terry kept the audience laughing as he told about hilarious patient events with a disclaimer of “you just can’t make this stuff up, ya’ll”. The presentation became more somber and gripping as Dr. Kevin Menes shared his memories and stories of the night he worked as attending MD at Sunrise Hospital when a shooter opened fire at the Las Vegas concert arena, critically wounding hundreds of people. He described the minute-by-minute action and reaction that he and his fellow staff members employed to rapidly triage and treat hundreds of mass casualty gunshot victims. Vendors partnered with the ENA to present a variety of new and innovative treatments to the nurse and physician attendees during breaks in the day. In addition to so many great educational topics, the delicious meals and a wonderful sunset bonfire, hosted by the San Diego Chapter of ENA and Mercy Air, made this conference a real pleasure to attend. Many conference attendees stayed at the resort to enjoy the facility, then attended the state chapter meeting held on Nov. 9.

This meeting marked the transfer of the Chair position from Dianne Idman-Gervais to Michele Redlo. Most of the meeting was spent introducing ourselves to each other, then discussing the education policy revision, adding: “No later than 2 weeks prior to the event”, referring to the submission of education materials to the Education Chair for CE credits. Additionally, we discussed the possibility of hosting another conference later this year. We have the opportunity to team up with FEMA to help us deliver the educational content. Kathy VanDusen has been the point person in contact with FEMA representatives and will follow-up with more information. The highlights include the FEMA education and educators would be provided free to CAL ENA. Other considerations we need to review are locations, one day vs. 2 days, inclusion of vendors, and size (number of attendees to host). More to follow. An email group list will be created of everyone that in attendance at the meeting and cross-referenced with any names provided by Dianne Idman-Gervais so that an email conversation can occur. Lastly, Michele has created an email address and asked it be posted to the website: firstname.lastname@example.org. When submitting educational content for CE review, or any matters related to the education committee, Michele requests it be sent to this new email address.

The committee discussed the speaker line-up for November’s education event. Suggested that in addition to the physician from Las Vegas we include a nurse who was working the night of the mass shooting. Mindy Potter and Kathy VanDusen attended the Loma Linda presentation and have contact information on the physician/nurse team that presented, we will follow up on adding this portion of the presentation at the November conference. Brainstormed ways to advertise the November event in San Diego. The flyer is complete and will be up on the CaliforniaENA website shortly. Will look into creating half sheet to include in the National Conference Assembly material and placing our conference information on ENA’s website. We reviewed current vendor status for November. Ideas were provided and we will reach out to these additional vendors. If you have vendor suggestions please email Dianne Idman-Gervais so they can be added to our spreadsheet and we make sure to contact them.
